How Cozy is a Goose Down Comforter Print E-mail
Thursday, 06 July 2006

Goose down has been the filling of choice for beds, pillows and comforters for centuries. One of the main reasons for this is the sheer luxurious comfort of goose down. Goose down has been renowned for its softness but it is also a very lightweight filling that insulates wonderfully while remaining breathable. Goose down is the soft and thick fluff that covers the undersides of geese. This down not only keeps them warm in the long winter months, but also helps insulate their eggs and the chicks once they are hatched and is soft enough to keep eggs and chicks safe and warm. Goose down is nature’s perfect insulator.

The down used in goose down comforters comes in a variety of styles and qualities. Some goose down comforters are mixed with goose feathers. This can lead to a firmer comforter, but the feathers can poke through, pricking your skin. Pure goose down is much more lightweight and won’t squash down like feathers will. Goose down retains its light fluffiness better than feathers or a mixture of down and feathers.

Siberian goose down is considered the best for it’s insulating qualities. Eiderdown comes from the Eider ducks of Iceland. Its down is considered the most luxurious. Another popular choice is Hungarian goose.

Goose down comforters are the softest and most luxurious comforters you can buy. For warmth and comfort, you can do no better than the cozy softness of a goose down comforter. Enveloped in a soft sheet of fine cotton or silk, a goose down comforter is like sleeping inside of a cloud of warmth.
